Make sure you always have the right vehicles

If your expertise is in caring for disabled people it’s unlikely that your skills are in fleet management.

And even if you’re a fleet manager, it’s unlikely that you’ll be an expert in Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles (WAVs).

We only deal with WAVs, and our mission is to make your life easier.

Whether you’ve got a vehicle off the road and you need a replacement double-quick or you’ve got some residents or service users going on holiday and you need an extra vehicle, we can help.

Or perhaps you’d like us to take a look at your fleet and help you to decide which vehicles are still suitable and meet current legislation. Maybe you don’t have the luxury of a fleet manager, and we could take care of the fleet management for you. We are happy to manage mixed fleets of standard and accessible vehicles.

You might even be a busy FD looking to reduce overheads by having vehicles only in the right place at the right time. Or you might be looking at residents using their own Motability cars, but want to ensure they get the most suitable vehicle.

We can manage everything from assessing individual needs to specifying suitable vehicles, managing supplier relationships and overall fleet management.

“When we reduced the size of our home units Fleximobility helped review our vehicle needs. The result is we’ve reduced costs and got more suitable vehicles.  It couldn’t be better – they even helped us with disposal of vehicles we couldn’t use anymore.”

The Fleximobility process

Regardless of whether you need a vehicle for a day, week, month or even longer, the Fleximobility process is the same.

  • We talk to you and find out all about what types of trips you want to use the vehicle for and who will be travelling.
  • Most importantly, we ask about the wheelchair user(s) and their wheelchairs. We’ll need measurements of the chair and sitting height of the chair user and if there are any particular needs which we ought to take into account.
  • We’ll want to know who will be driving and assisting the wheelchair user into the vehicle and if they have any preferences or practical or mobility issues we need to consider.
  • You may need to take luggage or other equipment with you, maybe folded wheelchairs. We’ll need to find room for all that.
  • We’ll then use our extensive market knowledge to match all your requirements to the most suitable vehicle, and away you go!

“One of our homes had a big minibus that was totally unsuitable. They only had one wheelchair user and she was sitting right at the back away from everyone else, so the carers didn’t really like driving it. Fleximobility came and assessed our requirements. The service users and staff are thrilled to bits and really enjoy going out now”

Common mistakes, and how to avoid them

Not understanding what’s going to be important.

Specifying a WAV is very different to buying or leasing a standard vehicle. All WAVs are different. Even WAVs of the same model name may have been converted differently and will have different dimensions and attributes.

You need to be certain that the needs of all user of the vehicle have been considered, from the wheelchair users to the walking passengers and the driver and other carer attendants. Safety and comfort are critical to the success of any trip.

You will also want to be certain that the vehicle will meet all current automotive and safety legislation and your driver licensing requirements.

Buying from someone who doesn’t know what they are selling.

Many used WAV and mini-bus dealers don’t know what the original equipment was or how it should be used.

Our advice:

  • Never buy or hire a WAV on-line without talking to someone about your specific needs.

  • Only buy or hire a WAV from someone who is more interested in finding out about you and less in telling you about their products.

  • If you are buying a WAV, never buy without a free demonstration.

  • Be wary of anyone who wants you to make a decision on the spot.

Fleximobility, Accessible Wheelchairs, Oxford

Some of our older residents needs are changing and, when they do, we just swap a people-carrier for a WAV.  And when a service user changed areas and we didn’t need the WAV at that house anymore we just made a phone call and it was collected
